A trio of artists from across the border have taken a break from painting Pakistan's colourful trucks to pitch in at the Nobin Palli Pandal. Their unique motifs and designs spread a message of peace and harmony.
"We are here for a month and a half. But it doesn't seem like we are in India. It feels like Pakistan. And when we go back we'll tell our people there are no differences. The division is between politicians," said Pakistani artist Haider Ali.
Gopal Poddar of the Nobin Palli Pujo Committee said, "All we are trying to say is that art has no caste, no religion, no barriers and no country." Then there is the French connection with the Pallimangal Pandal in South Kolkata having been conceptualised by the state's French cultural centre.
At the Mudiali club puja, the committee used the Tibetan thangka art to decorate the pandal and spread the message of religious harmony. Durga Pujo has long gone global. It's time now for the world outside to converge in Bengal for the state's biggest carnival. And with colourful messages that have strong political overtones, pandal hoppers of Kolkata now have more food for thought about the country's international relations.
